It was used to offer a second setting for live performance. He eventually sold the second Turbo Rat on eBay in mid-November 2006. Both were also on his board during Kid A/Amnesiac touring, though he switched to only using one in 2003. Thom added a second Turbo Rat to his setup circa-1997. Gain: 10:30, Filter 10:30, Volume 1:30 ProCo Turbo Rat No2 It can be heard on You, How Do You, Anyone Can Play Guitar, Ripcord?, Blow Out, Pop Is Dead, Just, My Iron Lung, and possibly Electioneering and The Tourist. Thom mainly used the Turbo Rat mainly for low-gain rhythm sounds, relying on other pedals to give him heavier distortion when needed. The Expandora incorporates circuitry from the Rat but is capable of many more sounds, so it makes sense that Thom would switch to the pedal. Thom’s original Turbo Rat remained on his main pedalboard through 2006, but Thom ceased using it circa-2008 upon the acquisition of his Bixonic Expandora.

During shows, Plank adjusts for the second board for Thom. It was around this time that he split his pedals onto two boards: one board is kept by his mic-stand which has the pedals that he activates during songs, and a second board is kept next to his amp and is filled with distortion pedals specific to individual songs. By the release of In Rainbows, he had experimented with further distortion pedals, such as the MXR Distortion+ and EHX Tube Zipper. His main setup then included Two Turbo Rats, a Shredmaster, a Tech 21 XXL, a DD5, and an FV5U, amongst others. For the Kid A/Amnesiac tours, Thom added a ton of pedals to his board (and Plank built him a bigger board for them). He added a second Turbo Rat some time during this period. During the tour for OK Computer, his setup was a Turbo Rat into a Shredmaster into a BOSS DD3, though a Tech 21 XXL was also in use. He likely added a Marshall Shredmaster by The Bends era. Overviewĭuring the tour for Pablo Honey, Thom only had a Turbo Rat and a BOSS TU2. Note: if you want the signal chain of Thom’s pedalboards over the years, see this page.
